M79 = NGC1904 ( 5h 24.5m -24°33´, 8.0 mag. )
This globular cluster in Lepus was discovered by Mechain in Oct. 1780. Messier observed it on Dec. 17, 1780. It is located about 43,000 ly away and measures some 75 ly across.

M79 (globular cluster)
Lepus is one of the many animals hunted by Orion, the Hunter.

M79 (NGC 1904) is a small globular cluster about 3.5 degrees SSW of beta Leporis. In the same field, half a degree to the SSW of this cluster, is h3752 (see above).

The constellation Lepus is the site of a beautiful globular cluster known as M79. This cluster is unusual because of its location in the sky. Most globular clusters are grouped near the center of our galaxy. This one is much closer to us.

Lepus contains a Messier object, the faint globular cluster M79 (NGC 1904).
