M86 = NGC4406 ( 12h 26.2m +12°57´, 9.2 mag. )
This elliptical galaxy in Virgo was discovered by Messier on March 18, 1781 next to M84.
M-84,M86: These relatively bright galaxies are very similar in appearance, and are visible in the same low-power field of view. M-84 is round, about 3' in diameter, has a large 1' diameter core, and a stellar nucleus.

M84, M86, and M87: three more ellipticals, in a very rich region. M87 is the centre of the Virgo Cluster, and is one of the most luminous galaxies known.
M89: small elliptical, resembling M87 but fainter.
M90: nice spiral in same region as M89.
M84 and M86 may be elliptical galaxies or S0 galaxies. The jury is still out.

Yet another lenticular galaxy to be found in the Virgo cluster is M86. This is a large, bright object that some believe may actually be an elliptical galaxy. It is surrounded by an extremely faint system of globular clusters.
