a hypothetical sequence of blue variable stars named for the B-type star Maia (20 tau) in the Pleiades. Maia has the lowest rotational velocity of any B star in the Pleiades.

Maia - eldest of the seven Pleiades, was mother of Hermes by Zeus
Electra was mother of Dardanus and Iasion by Zeus.
Taygete was mother of Lacedaemon, also by Zeus.
Alcyone was mother of Hyrieus by Poseidon.

The six brightest stars make a small dipper, Alcyone located where the two-star handle (made of Atlas and Pleione) joins the bowl, three of the sisters (Merope, Electra, and Maia) making the bowl itself, Asterope, Taygeta, ...

His mother, Maia, had been secretly impregnated by Zeus, in a secret affair. Maia wrapped the infant in blankets but Hermes escaped while she was asleep. Hermes ran to Thessaly, where Apollo was grazing his cattle.

Unlike their half-sisters the Hyades, the names of all seven Pleiades are assigned to stars in the cluster: Alcyone, Asterope (also known as Sterope), Celaeno, Electra, Maia, Merope and Taygete.

[7945] Maia is a blue giant classified as a mercury-manganese star. [7948] Merope is a blue-white subgiant classified as a Beta Cephei variable. [7957] Taygeta is another multiple system with a blue-white subgiant for the main component.

16 Tau Celaeno 17 Tau Electra 19 Tau Taygeta 20 Tau Maia 21 Tau Sterope I is known as Asterope when combined with Sterope II. 22 Tau Sterope II is known as Asterope when combined with Sterope I.

Known to the Greeks as Hermes, Mercury was the son of Jupiter and Maia.

Six stars are easily visible to the naked eyeAlcyone (the brightest), Electra, Celaeno, Sterope, Maia, and Taygete.

The Pleiades are, according to Greek mythology, the seven daughters of Atlas, the titan who holds up the sky, and the Oceanid named Pleione. The sisters are Alcyone, Maia, Electra, Taygeta, Celaeno, Merope and Sterope.
