Main article: Lunar mare
The dark and relatively featureless lunar plains which can clearly be seen with the naked eye are called maria (singular mare), Latin for seas, since they were believed by ancient astronomers to be filled with water.

Maria
A dark, flat, large region on the surface of the Moon. The term is also applied to the less well-defined areas on Mars. Although maria literally means "seas," watery regions do not exist on the Moon or Mars.

Maria. The Moon has two kinds of landscape — maria and terrae. Dark areas we see on the surface are referred to as maria because ancient peoples thought they were seas on the Moon. They imagined that liquid water was flowing in those regions.

Maria cover about 16% of the Moon but they are not evenly distributed. The near side ("our side") is rich in maria while maria on the far side are small and scarce. That's because the Moon's center of mass is not at its geometric center.

Why are the maria concentrated on the near side?
Why is the Moon's center of mass off center? Because of the tidal lock with the Earth?
Now that we've found water on the Moon, what are we going do to with it?

As mentioned above, the unaided eye can easily discern the main features of the near side of the Moon--namely, the patterns of dark maria and the lighter highlands.

The lunar highlands have about ten times more craters on a given area than do the maria. Does this mean that the highlands are ten times older? Explain your reasoning.

In particular, there are almost no Maria on the far side, as illustrated in the image shown to the left of a portion of the far side surface. In this figure a number of meteor impact craters are visible.

The evidence for LHB includes the lunar maria basins and similar structures elsewhere, such as the Caloris Basin on Mercury and the great craters in the southern hemisphere of Mars.

The maria, which are the dark patches on the Moons surface come out in stunning detail with a good pair of binoculars. These maria (Latin for seas) were long thought to be actual seas of water on the Moon.

The surface also sports vast floodplains of lava that dwarf the dark maria on the Moon. "The data collected in a mere few months has completely changed what we thought we knew about volcanism on Mercury," says Head.

The dark Martian surface markings, called "maria" or "albedo features," were once thought by some astronomers to be great lakes, oceans, or vegetation, but space probes in the 1970's revealed them to be vast expanses of rock and dust.

The most widely used taxonomic scheme, proposed by American astronomer David Tholen and Italian astronomer Maria Barucci in 1989, identifies 14 different classes - A, B, C, D, E, F, G, M, P, Q, R, S, T, and V.

They are known as the lunar maria (which are seas, though there is absolutely no water or atmosphere on the Moon).

At the age of twenty-three he repaired to Bologna, and there varied his studies of canon law by attending the astronomical lectures of Domenico Maria Novara (1454-1504).

Rocks from the lunar maria were formed when molten rock solidified between 3,160,000,000 and 3,960,000,000 years ago.

The Moon's surface is characterised by light mountainous regions interspersed with dark maria. The 'Man in the Moon' is formed from patches of these two types of terrain.

That suggested the "maria" could not possibly be oceans, though their name remained.

The dark areas are called maria (singular mare), the seas. They are in fact the solidified lava flows, which occurred after the formation of the lunar crust. Most of the "hills" are craters, not volcanoes.

The thinning and cracking of the crust allowed molten basalt from the interior to reach the surface and form its large dark lava plains ("maria"). The bombardment of large impacts ended about 3.
