Mars Pathfinder was launched on a Delta 7925 (a Delta II Lite launch vehicle with nine strap-on solid-rocket boosters and a Star 48 (PAM-D) third stage) at 6:58:00 UT (1:58 a.m. EST) on 4 December 1996.
Mars has some unique characteristics. First off, Mars has the largest volcano in the solar system, Olympus Mons. It also has the largest canyon system in the solar system called Valles Marineris.

What Is Mars Like?
Mars is very cold. The average temperature on Mars is minus 80 degrees Fahrenheit -- way below freezing! Its surface is rocky, with canyons, volcanoes and craters all over it. Red dust covers most of its surface.

Mars 4 was launched by the USSR on 21 July 1973 and its twin, Mars 5, was launched 4 days later on 25 July. As Mars 4 approached the red planet on 10 February 1974, its retro-engine malfunctioned.
Mars is our celestial neighbor so to speak. Various space agencies on Earth have sent probe after probe to study it from orbit as well as on the surface.
