MASER EFFECT
Population exchange between the two levels of any transition is governed by both collisional and radiative processes.

Maser: "Microwave-amplified stimulated emission of radiation". An amplifier of radio waves (similar to a laser, which amplifies visible light).

Maser
(microwave amplification by stimulated emission of radiation). A device that utilizes the natural oscillations of an atom or molecule to amplify electromagnetic radiation.

Maser -- A microwave travelling wave tube amplifier named for its process of Microwave Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation. Compare with Laser.

MASER
A highly intense source of microwave radiation occurring when metastable states in atoms or molecules become over-populated. Naturally occurring masers are found in some giant molecular clouds and around red giants.

Maser
A maser is a device that produces coherence electromagnetic waves through amplification due to stimulated emission.

maser - (n.)
An acronym for "microwave amplification by stimulated emission of radiation," a device by which certain energy levels are more populated than normal, ...

maser - An radiation; particular acronym for microwave amplification of stimulated emission a device for amplifying a microwave (radio) signal at a wavelength into a coherent beam.
microwave - Short-wave radio wavelengths.

Cepheid and Maser Distances Agree
11 Aug 2006 - Macri et al. give a Cepheid distance to NGC 4258, where Herrnstein et al. found a distance of 7.

maser An amplifier utilizing the principle of microwave amplification by stimulated emission of radiation. Emission of energy stored in a molecular or atomic system by a microwave power supply is stimulated by the input signal.

(From Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation.) Used for Fabry-Perot lasers, natural lasers, and optical masers.

The maser ring in NGC 4258, which is at high confidence in Keplerian motion at distances 0.14-0.28 pc from a central mass of 4 × 107 solar masses (Herrnstein et al. 1999 Nature 400, 539).

In September of 2002, a team of astronomers (including Cristiano Cosmovici of the Institute for Cosmic and Planetary Science) announced at the Second European Workshop on Exo/Astrobiology that they had detected water "maser" emissions from three of ...

Direct Doppler measures of water masers surrounding the nucleus of nearby galaxies have revealed a very fast keplerian motion, only possible with a high concentration of matter in the center.

Lasers and masers actually have negative absorption coefficients and hence negative opacities, because light passing through them causes an increase in the intensity.

One of VLBI's greatest achievements was mapping the motion of water maser hotspots around a supermassive black hole in the core of NGC 4258 which allowed astronomers to show unambiguously that supermassive black holes were present in the cores of ...

" And R Leo is indeed losing mass, the surrounding matter radiating powerful silicon monoxide (SiO) and hydroxyl (OH) masers, in which the molecules beam out laser-like microwave radio waves. Water is observed as well.

They are in fact more precise than the best hydrogen maser clocks on Earth. Given their extreme gravitational fields and high rates of spin they provide a useful test of of General Relativity.

As a result, radio waves are generated through a cyclotron maser mechanism, and the energy is transmitted out along a cone-shaped surface. When the Earth intersects this cone, the radio emissions from Jupiter can exceed the solar radio output.

The water vapor in these clouds acts as a natural maser, strengthening, or amplifying, radio emission the same way that lasers amplify light emission.

Most space physicists say that ionized gas in the upper atmosphere above Jupiter's magnetic poles sometimes behaves like a powerful radio laser or maser.

In the inner regions of dark nebulae important events take place, such as the formation of stars and masers.
