Meteor showers (and storms) occur when the Earth passes through a comet's orbit, and left-over comet debris (rocks, etc.) bombards the Earth. Each meteor shower occurs at a predictable time each year.

A meteor shower, some of which are known as a "meteor storm", "meteor outburst", or "shooting star", is a celestial event where a group of meteors are observed to radiate from one point in the sky.

About meteor showers
Many meteors originated in material stripped from comets by radiation from the Sun. This material continues to follow the orbit of the originating comet but gets spread out along the orbit.

Meteor showers are perhaps the easiest type of astronomical event to watch, and arguably one of the most stunning.

The meteor shower derives its name from the constellation Perseus, because the meteors seem to stream from this realm of the sky.

There is one rather strange example of a major meteor shower that is clearly identifiable with an astronomical object that, at least at first glance, does not appear to be a comet: the Geminid shower and 3200 Phaeton, respectively.

Meteor showers occur when Earth moves through a stream of particles produced by a decaying comet. This is because comets shed enormous quantities of material during each orbit. Some of the largest being Comet Halley and Encke.

Meteor Shower. On a dark, moonless night, a dozen meteors per hour may be seen all over the sky. During meteor showers, seen regularly at certain times of the year, as many as 30 to 100 meteors per hour may be seen.

Meteor showers should be predictable, but the meteors are cometary debris and so require calculations of orbits which are currently impossible to complete.

Most meteor showers are caused by comet debris, but the debris is not visible until it hits the Earth's atmosphere.

The term meteor shower is a bit misleading. It suggests that meteors are falling like rain. This isn't the case. What you will find is an increase in the number of meteors over what you would see on an average night.

The Lyrid meteor shower happens in April each year. The meteors in the Lyrid meteor shower seem to shoot outward from the constellation Lyra.
