A sharp increase in ground-level COSMIC RAY count to at least 10% above background, associated with solar protons of energies greater than 500 MeV. GLEs are relatively rare, occur- ring only a few times each SOLAR CYCLE. H-ALPHA.

The HIC can measure heavy ions with energies as low as 6 MeV (1 pJ) and as high as 200 MeV (32 pJ) per nucleon. This range includes all atomic substances between carbon and nickel.

Cosmic-Ray Detector (Prof. James A. Van Allen): An Anton 314 omnidirectional Geiger tube detector was used to measure the flux of energetic charged particles (protons >30 MeV and electrons >3 MeV). The detector was saturated much of the time.

26 MeV carrying 1.3 percent of the total energy released is produced. This produces a flux of 8 {times} 10{sup 10} neutrinos per square centimetre per second at the Earth.

0 MeV. The number of counts in the 4.2-6.4 MeV range was read out every 2.048 s. The number of counts in a 50 keV wide window around 300 keV was read out every 64 ms. The spectrometer was shielded by a 2.

51 million electron volts (MeV) of energy E as calculated from the equation formulated by Albert Einstein, E = mc2, in which c is a constant equal to the velocity of light. To produce two electrons, therefore, the photon energy must be at least 1.

EGRET was the final experiment on board, and it observed the highest energy photons in CGRO's spectral range -- 30 MeV to 30 GeV. It utilized a combination of detectors, like COMPTEL.

In recent years it has become customary to write MeV and GeV for mega (106) and giga (109) electron volts.

ULTRA HIGH ENERGY COSMIC RAYS (UHECR) - Extremely energetic subatomic particles (mostly protons, but also some heavier atomic nuclei) with energies >109 MeV. The record holder so far is a UHECR with an energy of 6 × 1014 MeV! ...

6 MeV. For most nuclei, binding energy lies between about 7 and about 9 MeV per nucleon, reaching a maximum of about 9 MeV for nuclei of mass number about 60.

Given its small value, energies are often expressed as mega-electron volts (1 MeV = 106 eV) and giga-electron volts (1 GeV = 109 eV).
Although not a standard unit of measurement, it is typically used to measure the energies of elementary particles.

3--3 MeV, a triaxial magnetometer, a meteorite detector, instruments for solar-plasma studies, and devices for measuring infrared emissions from the Moon and radiation conditions of the lunar environment. Gravitational studies were also conducted.

The Cosmic Ray Subsystem, CRS, on the Voyagers measures the presence and angular distribution of particles from planets' magnetospheres, and from sources outside our solar system: electrons of 3-110 MeV and nuclei 1-500 MeV from hydrogen to iron.

5 MeV. Pairs of photons in coincidence could be detected by the two scintillation detectors above and below the target.

At temperatures below about 1 MeV, the ratio freezes as the expansion decreases the density of available particles for two-body processes.

This very small amount of energy is equal to 1.602 * 10-19 joules. Because an electron volt is so small, engineers and scientists sometimes use the terms MeV (mega-million) and GeV (giga-billion) electron volts.

A keV (or kiloelectron volt) is equal to 1000 electron volts. An MeV is equal to one million electron volts. A GeV is equal to one billion (109) electron volts. A TeV is equal to a million million (1012) electron volts.
