Milky Way Galaxy
Our home galaxy. The Milky Way is a spiral galaxy with four major arms containing young bright stars, gas, and dust. The mass of the Milky Way is estimated to be between 400 billion and one trillion times the mass of the Sun.

The bright glow of the Milky Way stretching across the night sky is one of the greatest sights afforded us.

Milky Way
The Milky Way (a translation of the Latin Via Lactea, in turn derived from the Greek Î"αÎ"αξίας (Galaxias), sometimes referred to simply as "the Galaxy"), is a barred spiral galaxy which forms part of the Local Group.

Definition: Milky Way Galaxy: The spiral galaxy containing our sun. Visible on the northern hemisphere in summer in the night sky as the Milky Way, a faint band stretching over the sky.

The Milky Way is the name given to the faint band of light that stretches accross the night sky. This light comes from stars and nubulae in our galaxy, known as the Milky Way Galaxy or simply as the Galaxy.

Stars are organized into large, gravitationally-bound groups called galaxies. Our galaxy is the Milky Way Galaxy.

The Milky Way Galaxy - Our Home
The Milky Way is the spiral galaxy we call home, as do roughly 100 billion other stars. It looks very much like other spiral galaxies when viewed from above. There are spiral arms and a nucleus.

The Milky Way
What is a galaxy?
A galaxy is a huge collection of stars, dust and gas. They usually consist of up to a trillion stars. There are hundreds of billions of galaxies in the universe, in different shapes, sizes and brightness.

The Milky Way
These are two wide angle photographs of the Milky Way taken in the 1953. The camera itself is located at the apex of the tripod and is looking down at the spherical mirror, giving it a field of view of up to 150 degrees.

The Milky Way
We take up next the large systems composed of many stars that are known as galaxies. In particular we will focus upon the Galaxy that our sun is located within, namely the Milky Way Galaxy.

The Milky Way is a spiral galaxy. We believe that it consists of a central bulge, 4 major arms, and several shorter arm segments.

The Milky Way is not, of course, a constellation, but a band of faint light crossing the sky. The Roman writer Manilius compared it to the luminous wake of a ship.

The Milky way Galaxy is just one galaxy in a group of galaxies called the . Within the Local Group, the Milky Way Galaxy is moving about 300 km/sec (towards the Virgo).

When the Milky Way rims the horizon on a May Day evening, that means the year is about halfway between the March equinox and the June solstice. It's easy to imagine that the hoarfrost of winter is giving way to the fireflies of summer.

Our galaxy, the Milky Way, is disk-shaped with spiral arms in the disk.

Finding Your Way in the Milky Way
When we look at the sky, we see everything projected onto two dimensions. Objects near and far can be confused if we lack independent knowledge of those objects' distances.

MILKY WAY
MILKY WAY, the large, disk-shaped aggregation of stars, or galaxy, that includes the sun and its solar system. Its name is derived from its appearance as a faintly luminous band that stretches across earth's sky at night.

Milky Way Galaxy The spiral galaxy in which the Sun resides. The disk of our Galaxy is visible in the night sky as the faint band of light known as the Milky Way.

Milky Way Galaxy
The Milky Way, or simply the Galaxy, is the galaxy in which the Solar System is located. It is a barred spiral galaxy that is part of the Local Group of galaxies. It is one of billions of galaxies in the observable universe.

MILKY WAY
The Milky Way is a bright line of stars stretching across the night sky. It is easier to see when you are far from bright city lights.

Our Milky Way galaxy is a member of a small group of galaxies that forms a modest density enhancement in the universe of galaxies.

The Milky Way is a spiral galaxy containing over 100 billion stars. It is over 100,000 light years (or 600,000,000,000,000,000 miles) in diameter and has a disk containing spiral arms and a dense central sphere or bulge.

Our Milky Way Galaxy is in a cluster of galaxies, called the Local Group. It contains other galaxies, such as M31, LMC and SMC. Typically, a cluster of galaxies contains 1000 galaxies within a million parsecs.

When astronomers study the Milky Way, they can learn about the birth, life and death of its stars because they see the stars at various evolutionary stages.

The Milky Way, Andromeda, and several other smaller galaxies form the Local Group, a small galaxy cluster. Galaxy clusters consist of a collection of galaxies orbiting one another, bound together by their own gravity.

With the Milky Way passing through Carina, there are many open clusters to observe in the constellation.

What is the milky way ?
This is the name given to the misty band of stars that can be seen on a good clear night. This misty band is caused by the shape of our galaxy. When we look at the milky way we are looking along the crowded plane of our galaxy.
