Monoceros, the unicorn:
A modern constellation created in 1624 and credited to the German astronomer Jakob Bartsch. He used faint stars found between Canis Major and Canis Minor, and east of Orion.

But Monoceros does have something interesting to see with the aid of a small telescope. Beta Monocerotis is an impressive triple star system, the three stars form a triangle which seems to be fixed. The visual magnitudes of the stars are 4.7, 5.

The core of Monoceros R2 is dense - no more than 2 light-years across - and packed with massive young stars, as well as a cluster of infrared sources such as newborn stars still surrounded by material and dusty discs.

With the star 20,000 light-years away from Earth in the direction of the constellation Monoceros, the star is at the outer edge of our Milky Way galaxy.

Located in the constellation of Monoceros is an open cluster of stars known as M50. This cluster is estimated to contain about 200 stars. It is about 10 light-years in diameter and is believed to be located around 3,000 light-years from Earth.

The 838th variable star in the constellation Monoceros.
Claim to Fame:
In early 2002, V838 Mon produced enough energy in a brief flash to illuminate the surrounding dust. Light from this outburst travels to the dust and then is reflected to Earth.

Gravitational interactions with the Milky Way have stripped long tidal tails from the Canis Major dwarf galaxy, which have wrapped themselves around the Milky Way three times in a structure known as the 'Monoceros Ring'.
