Mu Cephei is known as Herschel's Garnet Star. It is a red supergiant and one of the largest stars known to us. Only four more stars are larger than mu Cephei, and two of those are in the same constellation: VV Cephei A and V354 Cephei.

Mu Cephei is a brilliantly coloured star, a deep red which moved William Herschel to call it "The Garnet Star". The colour depends on the size of one's telescope; the larger scopes bring out an orange element.

[2328] mu Cephei is a semiregular variable star, a supergiant of a deep red colour. It was named "Garnet Star" by William Herschel, who admired its appearance. In larger telescopes, mu Cephei also shows an orange element.
