Nebular Theory
The nebular theory offers an explanation of this most remarkable uniformity. Laplace supposed the existence of a primeval nebula which extended so far out as to fill all the space at present occupied by the planets.

nebular theory One of the earliest models of solar system formation, dating back to Descartes, in which a large cloud of gas began to collapse under its own gravity to form the Sun and planets.

nebular theory
A theory that describes the slow collapse of a nebulous gas cloud into a protostar.

Nebular Theory
The idea that our solar system originated in a contracting, rotating cloud of gas that flattened to form a disk as it contracted.

The Modern Nebular theory
The UKIRT image of the central region of the Orion nebula (Image: Phil Lucas). Observations of very young stars indicate that they are surrounded by dense dusty disks.

passage of a comet, but modern versions of this theory invoke a passing star. The gaseous debris torn from the sun by tidal forces is supposed to have condensed into the planets; however, this theory has been replaced by the nebular theory. [Silk90] ...
