New Comet - A comet that has entered the inner solar system for the first time
New Phase - The phase of the moon in which none or almost none of the near side of the Moon is illuminated by sunlight, so the near side appears dark ...

A new comet may be discovered photographically using a wide-field telescope or visually with binoculars.

A new comet has been discovered using telescopes at the University Of Hawaii. Predicted to be visible in the night sky in early 2013, this may be the comet's only trip into the inner Solar System.

In the past and present, amateur astronomers have played a major role in discovering new comets.

The Discovery of Hale-Bopp Astronomers have a long-standing tradition: If a person discovers a new comet, he or she is rewarded by having his or her name attached to it.

Since it was not at all obvious where the center of mass of this new comet lay, most observers were using the position of what appeared to be the center of the train. This made an accurate orbit (or orbits) difficult to determine.

It is possible that a new comet could be a threat but there is another defence system that protects our planet.

5725 reporting the discovery as a new comet, giving it the provisional designation of 1993e (the fifth comet discovered or recovered in 1993).

That catalogue listed cloudy and fuzzy objects in the sky, to warn astronomers searching for new comets (Messier himself discovered 15) off objects which looked like comets but weren't.

During this period Zach enlisted 24 astronomers throughout Europe in making a systematic search for new comets and for the planet between Mars and Saturn expected on the basis of Bode’s law (the Titius-Bode law).

During his lifetime, any person who found a new comet became well known amongst their peers, but, also became a celebrity. Messier lived in what could be considered precarious times for professional astronomers.

Messier decided to start his catalogue of "nebulous" objects (which he hoped would prevent confusion during searches for new comets) after finding M1 when following bright comet on September 12, 1758.

Rosetta was to have been launched in January 2003 on an Ariane 5 rocket from Kourou. Unfortunately, previous Ariane 5 launches had failed and Rosetta was postponed to February 2004, and the new comet target had to selected.

After that, they are numbered in order of their perihelion passage (for example, the Arend-Roland Comet was 1956h but became 1957 III). New comets are being discovered at the rate of 10-12 a year, many of them by amateurs.
