During its brightest phase, at "full moon", the Moon has an apparent magnitude of about âˆ'12.6. By comparison, the Sun has an apparent magnitude of âˆ'26.8.

Large magnifications are very useful for observing the Moon and the planets; however, since stars appear as point sources owing to their great distances, magnification provides no additional advantage when viewing them.

Some amateur astronomers start with observing the moon This image was taken with a Canon Digital Rebel XT attached to a lens with an 800mm focal length at 1/125th of a second.

They can be seen by observing the Moon with binoculars. The time when they are most visible is at first and last quarter when the shadows caused by the craters are fairly long, and therefore more visible.

Observing the Moon ...

The masses of planets with moons may be calculated by application of Newton's laws of motion and gravity, just by observing the moons' orbits around the planets.
