Optical telescopes give such clear images since the wavelength of visible light is so small in relation to the diameter of the focusing device (mirror or lens).

Optical telescopes fall into two basic categories"reflectors and refractors. Figure 5.1 shows how a reflecting telescope uses a curved mirror to gather and concentrate a beam of light.

A telescope that gathers and magnifies visible light. The two basic types of optical telescopes are refracting (using lenses) and reflecting (using mirrors). The Hubble Space Telescope is an example of a reflecting telescope.

Nordic Optical Telescope
This image of Jupiter was taken with the 2.6 meter Nordic Optical Telescope, located at La Palma, Canary Islands. It is a good example of the best imagery that can be obtained from earth based telescopes.

Types of Optical Telescopes
There are three major types of optical telescopes, classified according to the element that gathers and focuses the incoming light.

Keck telescopes
