PECULIAR GALAXY
A peculiar is an that has an abnormal shape (neither elliptical, spiral, nor lenticular) and/or has another , like jets of gas spewing from the nucleus, unusual amounts of dust, low surface brightness, etc.

This bright peculiar galaxy corresponds to one of the strongest radiosources in the sky. It can be found about 4°30' N of w Centauri or the same distance W of m Centauri (see finder chart below).

This peculiar galaxy is 10'x2-3', oriented NE-SW. It has slightly tapering ends, and a great amount of mottling across its length can be seen. The southern edge appears flatter, and it seems to be "pinched" near the center on this side. Fascinating.

The Hubble Space Telescope has captured a dramatic view of the peculiar galaxy Centaurus A.
