Pictor is a faint constellation in the southern hemisphere, lying near the Large Magellanic Cloud.

Pictor was also named by Lacaille during his sojourn at the Cape of Good Hope. He originally called it le Chevalet et la Palette, the easel and palette and later Equuleus Pictorius, soon shortened to Pictor.

Pictor has attracted attention in recent years because of its second-brightest star β Pictoris, 58.7 light-years distant, which is surrounded by an unusual dust disk rich in carbon.

Pictor, the painter:
A modern constellation created between 1750-1754 by Nicolas Louis de La Caille from stars found between Columba, the dove, and Carina, the keel. The original name of the constellation was Equuleus Pictoris, the Painter's Easel.

Pictor, shown with the name Pluteum Pictoris in the Uranographia of Johann Bode (1801). Bode closely followed Lacaille's original depiction of the constellation, unlike many other cases.

This movement is called Pictorialism, often using soft focus for a dreamy, 'romantic' look.

These three images show dust rings around a newly formed stars. Beta Pictoris' disk is slightly warped possibly due to the gravitational pull of a planet. The other two images also show gaps, bright and dark areas similar to Saturn's rings.
