U Geminorum Star
A type of dwarf nova (q.v.). All U Geminorum stars are binaries containing a white dwarf and a red dwarf with total masses of roughly 1-2 M and with periods of less than 12 hours (period of U Gem, 1.5 × 104 seconds).

The "Pollux twin" looks like he is trying to balance on ORION's shoulder. He has a straight left leg formed by a line from Pollux to his left foot, Alhena. If you continue that line you'll come to Betelgeuse (and Rigel).

Castor and Pollux, the "twins" of Gemini, were Greek heroes. They were among the men Jason led on his voyages on the Argo.
This is one of the 13 constellations of the Zodiac.

In 150 AD, the astronomer Ptolemy described Sirius as reddish, along with five other stars, Betelgeuse, Antares, Aldebaran, Arcturus and Pollux, all of which are clearly of orange or red hue.

Gemini represents the twins Castor and Polydeuces (Pollux is the Latin form of his name); they were known to the Greeks as the Dioscuri, literally meaning ‘sons of Zeus'.

Gemini (the Twins) is easily visualised as two figures holding hands, their heads represented by the stars Castor and Pollux.

Although it has the Bayer designation "alpha", it is actually fainter than Beta Geminorum (Pollux). Astronomically, Castor was discovered to be a visual binary in 1719, with the magnitude of its components being 2.8 and 2.0.

[3938] beta Geminorum, Pollux, is brighter than Castor. It is an orange giant 34 light-years distant. In 2006, an extrasolar planet was discovered orbiting the star. It was named Pollux b or Polydeuces.

Los Griegos antiguos vieron los gemelos Castor y Pollux, hijos de Leda y Zeus. Los Romanos vieron a los hermanos, Rómulo y Remus, dos héroes que fundaron Roma.

Named stars: Alpha Gem (Castor), Beta Gem (Pollux), Gamma Gem (Alhena), Delta Gem (Wasat), Zeta Gem (Mekbuda), Eta Gem (Tejat)
Info: Gemini is one of the 13 zodiacal constellations (that is, the Sun passes through it in the course of the year).

Incidentally, the constellation Gemini's brightest stars, Pollux and Castor, shine to the Moon's immediate right tonight, nearly in line with the Moon; and the intensely bright point of light to the Moon's upper left is the planet Jupiter.

Nearly directly overhead are two bright stars, near one another. The brighter of these will appear redish. These are the stars Pollux (brighter) and Castor (the dimmer of the two). These are both the heads of the two twins of Gemini.

To the left are bright Pollux and Castor and above them Procyon in Canis Minor. From a dark sky the fuzzy patch of M 44 will be apparent, and is really the main distinguishing feature of this otherwise inconspicuous constellation.
