Astronomy Population IIPortia

PORRIMA (Gamma Virginis). Follow the curve of the handle of the Big Dipper to the south as it first passes through orange Arcturus and then south of the sky's equator through blue- white Spica.

Another star γ Virginis, also known as Porrima, will be much closer to Saturn during June. At its least, the distance between the two will be only half the diameter of the full moon, just over 15 arc-minutes. Saturn will be above Porrima.

Gamma Virginis is called Porrima, after a Roman goddess. According to Ovid in his Fasti, Porrima and her sister Postverta were the sisters or companions of the prophetess Carmenta.

[8779] gamma Virginis, also known as Porrima and Arich, is a binary star, 38.6 light-years distant. It consists of two F class stars with close apparent magnitudes, 3.48 and 3.50. It is the second brightest star in Virgo.

Gamma Virginis carries the name of the Roman goddess of prophecy: Porrima. Porrima is a notable binary of twin stars (see below). It's 32.9 light years distant and has the diameter of 1.5 Suns.
