Praesepe is at a distance of 500 light years from the Earth. With the naked eye it looks like a hazy patch, but even a small pair of binoculars resolves it into hundreds of stars.

Praesepe, or the Beehive Cluster, is a very popular feature among astronomers. Also known as Messier 44, M44, NGC 2632 or Cr 189, the Beehive Cluster is located right in the centre of the Cancer constellation.

The " beehive cluster " Praesepe in Cancer is an example of an easily resolved cluster composed of fairly bright stars.

From a dark country site on a moonless night, you can still see the Praesepe with the unaided eye. It's the smudge of light to the immediate right of Jupiter from now till the end of May.

This famous cluster is also known as Praesepe, and more recently, the Beehive Cluster. The Beehive was given this name because to some it resembles a swarm of bees.

The open star cluster M44, also called Praesepe or Beehive Cluster, is a swarm of stars of 6th mag and fainter. Without optical help is appears as a misty patch. Because it considerably large its best viewed with binoculars.

Ptolemy described Phatne as ‘the nebulous mass in the chest'. Astronomers now know this star cluster by its Latin name Praesepe, but it is popularly termed the Beehive (praesepe can mean both ‘manger' and ‘hive').

At the center of the crab's shell is a huge open cluster, the Beehive cluster, also known as Praesepe (M44). The open cluster M67 is nearby. The brightest star in Cancer is Acubens (meaning claw); the second-brightest is Al Tarf (meaning tip).

Look for the constellation just to the west of Leo. Within Cancer can be found M44, also known as the Beehive Cluster, or the Praesepe. This is an open cluster of stars, that under a dark sky looks like a small, fuzzy cloud.

The most obvious feature in the image above is the large open cluster Messier 44, also known as Praesepe, which appears to the unaided eye as a fuzzy patch.
