PROGRADE MOTION
The 'normal' direction of motion of Solar System objects. In space this is anti-clockwise around the Sun as seen from above the north pole of the Sun. In the sky it is from west to east.

Prograde Motion - The eastward (normal) revolution of a solar system body.
Prograde Rotation - The eastward rotation of a solar system body ...

Prograde Motion
Motion in the same direction as the prevailing direction of motion.

prograde motion - (n.)
Orbital or spin motion in the forward or "normal" direction; in the solar system, this is counterclockwise as viewed looking down from above the north pole.

Direct Motion (Prograde Motion).
(1) Rotation or orbital motion in a anticlockwise direction when viewed from the north pole of the Sun (i.e. in the same sense as the Earth); the opposite of retrograde.

These are April 11, 2009, when it will be in prograde motion; July 17, 2009, when it will be in retrograde motion; and February 7, 2010, when it will be in prograde motion.

This is referred to as prograde motion. However, peridiocally the motion changes and they move east-to-west through the stars. We call this retrograde motion.

We call it the prograde motion. Because the orbital speed of the Earth is larger, it sometimes "catches up" the superior planets. Apparently, they will move in the opposite direction, from east to west. We call it the retrograde motion.

Direct motion Another term for prograde motion.
Dobsonian Named for John Dobson, who originated the design. An altazimuth mount constructed usually of plywood or MDF suited to home construction. Also refers to a telescope so mounted.

This is prograde motion. Occasionally, near opposition, the planet would appear to rotate in the night sky faster than the stars. This is retrograde motion. Ptolemy's model, in part, sought to explain this behavior.
