Quiescent prominences

Astronomy Quasi-stellar objectR Star

Quiescent prominences persist for days or even weeks, hovering high above the photosphere, suspended by the Sun's magnetic field.

Quiescent prominences bulge out from the surface about 20,000 mi (32,000 km) and can last days or weeks.

Quiescent prominences form within the remnants of decayed active regions, in quiet areas of the Sun between active regions, or at high solar latitudes where active regions seldom form. (See filament.) ...

There appears to be some connexion between prominences and spots; quiescent prominences are sometimes found above the spots, and W. M. Mitchell records an eruptive prominence followed next day in the same place by the appearance of a small spot.

Mass of hot, hydrogen rising from the Sun's chromosphere, best observed indirectly during a total eclipse. Eruptive prominences are violent in force and may reach heights of 2 million km; quiescent prominences are relatively pacific but may last for ...
