The Las Campanas Redshift Survey observed redshifts for more than 20,000 galaxies in the South and North galactic polar caps.
Redshift Survey
The methodical tabulation of the redshifts of a large number of galaxies in a particular region of the sky. Redshifts directly measure the recessional speeds of galaxies.

The 2dF QSO Redshift Survey provides spectra , field images and other information on 25,000 QSOs gathered using the 2dF instrument on the AAT.
The 2dF galaxy redshift survey measured the distances to hundreds of thousands of galaxies in the (relatively) nearby Universe.
Along with large-scale clustering structure, redshift surveys have revealed its inverse - voids with dimensions 100 Mpc devoid of luminous galaxies.
In the first, and simplest, they are measured not directly but by using a redshift survey of a large number of galaxies to make a map in `redshift space'.
In 2003, the Anglo-Australian Observatory released a much larger survey (``2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey'') of over 221,000 galaxies in two slices that extend over 1.5 billion light years in a two-degree field of the sky.
However, based on redshift survey data, in 1989 Margaret Geller and John Huchra discovered the "Great Wall," a sheet of galaxies more than 500 million light-years long and 200 million wide, but only 15 million light-years thick.
Images such as the HUDF and all of the redshift surveys help astronomers understand the evolution of not only galaxies but also the Universe.
