Resolution is an important instrument characteristic in astronomy. An imaging telescope with very low spatial resolution will not reveal small features such as a star's nearby companion or the fine structure of a supernova remnant.

resolution In astronomy, "resolution" or "resolving power" refers to the ability of a telescope to distinguish details. "Angular resolution" refers to the ability to distinguish details in an image.

Resolution, which can also be expressed as beam width, is a function of the wavelength of the signal and the diameter of the reflector.

resolution
A measure of the amount of detail visible in an image. A large telescope has a higher resolution than a smaller one, and can, therefore, see greater detail in objects.

A telescope's spatial (or angular) resolution refers to how well it can distinguish between two objects in space which are separated by a small angular distance - it is the telescopes ability to resolve fine detail.

The High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment onboard the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter continues to amaze scientists with its detailed images.
