In a bid to answer the burning question of how galactic formation patterns become established and evolve, the research team led by Dr Yusei Koyama used the Subaru Prime Focus Camera to make a panoramic observation of the rich galaxy cluster ...

For example, spiral galaxies are relatively rare in regions of high galaxy density, such as the central regions of rich galaxy clusters.

Abell 2218 is the rich galaxy cluster shown in this Hubble Space Telescope image.

This is another Hubble Space Telescope image. It is of the rich galaxy cluster Abell 2218. The arc in this image is an illusion caused by the gravitational field of the cluster. (Courtesy of NASA)

While most of the matter in rich galaxy clusters is dark, we find it is so only by about a three-to-one margin, not a ten- or hundred-to-one margin, as expected.

It is very fortunate that the nearest rich galaxy cluster lies in Virgo, spilling over into Coma. It is about 65 million light years away and contains thousands of galaxies, some of which are listed under 'Related images' below.
