SADALMELIK (Alpha Aquarii). Though possessed of a rather obscure name, Sadalmelik, the Alpha star of the constellation Aquarius (the Water Carrier), is hardly without its intrigue.
Sadalmelik is a yellow G2Ib supergiant having a luminosity of perhaps 3000 times that of the sun. The spectral type implies a temperature of about 5400 K, a mass maybe 10 times that of the sun, and a diameter more than 100 times that of the sun.
Alpha Aquarii ("Sadalmelik") and beta Aquarii ("Sadalsuud") are twin supergiants with nearly identical names. The names mean, respectively, "The Lucky One of the King" and "The Luckiest of the Lucky".
The second brightest star in the constellation is [265], alpha Aquarii, or Sadalmelik, a gigantic star 760 light-years away from Earth with a diameter 60 times that of our Sun. Sadalmelik is also classified as a G-type (yellow) supergiant.
Alpha Aquarii is called Sadalmelik, from sa'd al-malik, usually translated as ‘the lucky stars of the king'. Beta Aquarii is called Sadalsuud, from sa'd al-su'ud, possibly meaning ‘luckiest of the lucky'.
