Stair-step Scarps
The Galileo spacecraft took this image of dark terrain within Nicholson Regio, near the border with Harpagia Sulcus on Jupiter's moon Ganymede. The ancient, heavily cratered dark terrain is faulted by a series of scarps.

But Mercury has one distinctive non-lunar feature - numerous cliffs, hundreds of miles long, called scarps. Some rise three kilometers (two miles) above the planet's surface.
The orientation of the scarps and other linear features further constrains the mechanisms of global crustal fracturing and movement (tectonic deformation).
Another region of smooth plains to the southwest of Sarandib, is criss-crossed by several troughs and scarps. Cassini has since viewed these smooth plains regions, like Sarandib Planitia and Diyar Planitia at much higher resolution.
Scarps also abound on Mercury, the largest being Discovery Rupes (550 km long).

the term applied to scarps on planetary surfaces; many scarps are thought to be the surface expression of faults within the crust of the planetary object.

There are many rupes (lines of mountainous cliffs or scarps) on the lunar surface. These are remnants of the rims of ancient craters. The Rupes Altai is a mountain range about 315 miles (50 km) long on the moon.
