The scientific method seeks to explain the events of nature in a reproducible way, and to use these reproductions to make useful predictions.

While the Scientific Method may seem like a rather formal way of describing how science works, you have to remember that this isn't the way things were always done. In the past there may not have been testing or even an attempt to test a hypothesis.
