Scorpius, the scorpion:
Scorpius is one of the most ancient and the most recognizable constellations in the night sky. The pattern of stars that create this constellation can easily be imagined as a scorpion.

Scorpius X-1 (α 16h 19m 55.1s, δ -15° 38' 25'') was the first X-ray source detected outside of our solar system, in June 1962, by astronomers at MIT.

Scorpius also appears in one version of the story of Phaethon, the mortal son of Helios, the sun. Phaeton asked to drive the sun-chariot for a day. Phaeton lost control of the chariot.

Scorpius clearly resembles a scorpion, particularly the curving line of stars that form its tail with its sting raised to strike. Old star maps show one foot of Ophiuchus, to the north, awkwardly overlapping the scorpion's body.

The second advantage is that many bright sources like Cyg X-1, Crab Nebula, Scorpius X-1 and Galactic Centre sources are observable from Hyderabad due to their favourable declination.

In the Pyramid Age, the equinoxes were in Taurus, not far from the border with Aries, and Scorpius, along the border with Libra (Figure 9).

This source is called Scorpius X-1, the first X-ray source found in the constellation of Scorpius, located in the direction of the center of the Milky Way. Based on this discovery, Riccardo Giacconi received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2002.

For North America this month, the Moon occults (passes in front of) the star Antares of the constellation Scorpius.

Residing 5,500 light years away in the direction of the constellation Scorpius, the Cat's Paw (more properly known as NGC 6334) is a dense cloud of molecular (HII) hydrogen gas that is forming stars.

Located in the constellation Scorpius is an 8th magnitude globular cluster called M80. This cluster has a diameter of around 90 light-years and is located roughly 36,000 light-years from the Earth.

Among the constellations the Milky Way passes through are Carina, Crux (the Southern Cross), Sagittarius (where it is brightest), Scorpius, Aquila, Cygnus, Perseus, Cassiopeia, Auriga, and Gemini.

A spinning black hole in the constellation Scorpius has created a stable dent in the fabric of space-time, scientists say. The dent is the sort of thing predicted by Albert Einsteinšs theory of general relativity.

Although it is listed as a northern latitude target, it may be difficult to see due to its location in Scorpius. It is bright enough to be seen without visual aids under good seeing conditions.

These patches of neutral hydrogen atoms were produced during expansion of a larger bubble created by supernovae and stellar winds in the Scorpius-Centaurus Association, which lies ~500 light-years away.

For example, Scorpius is only visible in the northern hemisphere's evening sky during the summer. Which constellations are circumpolar and which are seasonal depends on your latitude and will change from place to place around the world.

Venus starts the year in Libra, moves across a narrow portion of Scorpius between the 10th and 15th, when it will cross into Ophiuchus.

In a golden field guide, I read that the Sun spends more time in the constellation Ophiuchus than in Scorpius right now, because of the precession of the equinoxes. I believe this is incorrect.

For example, Scorpius is only visible in the northern hemisphere's evening sky in the summer. Some historians suspect that many of the myths associated with the constellations were invented to help the farmers remember them.

The globular cluster in which the system resides, M4, is approximately 5,600 light-years away in the constellation Scorpius.

The name Antares derives from Greek: anti ares meaning "The Rival of Mars." The name may have to do with the color of the star or with its placement in the constellation of Scorpius, which was particularly associated with Mars in astrology.

Some bright clusters and star formation regions are indicated as well as the location of some of the stars of Sagittarius and Scorpius. The point in the sky that is the direction toward the center of the galaxy is also shown.

Globular Cluster: A globular cluster consists of over ten thousand stars in a region of 100 light years. Comparing with the open cluster, their stars are older. Moreover, the stars are concentrated. An example is M80 in Scorpius.

Its brightness has varied since then and has reached as high as magnitude 1.6 or 1.7, altering the familiar appearance of Scorpius. As of 2005, the flare up is still continuing.
