Sculptor is a faint constellation in the southern hemisphere. Its name is Latin for "sculptor.

Sculptor is one of those obscure constellations invented by Nicolas Louis de Lacaille to help fill in part of the southern sky.

Lacaille invented Sculptor in 1760s. It covers an area any stars brighter than magnitude 4.

Sculptor, the sculptor:
Created in the 1750's by French astronomer Nicolas Louis de La Caille, the constellation was originally called L'Atelier du Scuplteur, the sculptor's workshop. It is a large constellation but contains no bright stars.

Sculptor was named by Abbé Nicolas Louis de Lacaille. He first called it "L'Atelier du Sculpteur" (The Sculptor's Workshop), but like other constellations he named, it was thankfully shortened.

My first view of the Sculptor Dwarf Galaxy was with my jacket collar pulled up over my binocular eyepieces. I looked like a cross between the Headless Horseman and the Guns of Navarone, but I saw the galaxy.
However, the group is very dynamic and membership of the Group is probably changing over time as galaxies interact with, and move between, other nearby groups such as the Maffei 1 Group, the Sculptor Group, and the M81 and M83 Groups.
The Cassegrain relecting telescope (named for the French sculptor Sieur Guillaume Cassegrain) was developed in 1672.
