Seyfert galaxy Seyfert galaxies are spiral or irregular galaxies containing an extremely bright nucleus, most likely caused by a supermassive black hole, that can sometimes outshine the surrounding galaxy.
Seyfert Galaxy : A Seyfert galaxy is any of a class of galaxies known to have active nuclei. Such galaxies were named for the American astronomer Carl K. Seyfert, who first called attention to them in 1944.

Seyfert galaxy Type of active galaxy whose emission comes from a very small region within the nucleus of an otherwise normal-looking sprial system.
SEYFERT GALAXY A Seyfert galaxy is an active spiral galaxy. Its nucleus (center) has bright emission lines, including visible wavelengths. The brightness varies over relatively short time periods (less than a year).
Seyfert Galaxy: A galaxy that appears to be a normal spiral galaxy, but whose core fluctuates in brightness. It is believed that these fluctuations are caused by powerful eruptions in the core of the galaxy.
Seyfert Galaxy (a) A type of spiral galaxy first discovered by Karl Seyfert in the 1940s. The central region of a Seyfert galaxy is distinguished by powerful radiation, much of it focused into narrow frequencies.

This Seyfert galaxy in Cetus was found by Mechain in 1780 and Messier observed it on December 17, 1780. M77 is located 47 million ly away and its outer regions measure 100,000 ly across.
Seyfert galaxy NGC 3516 (center source) in the northern sky. The galaxy's bright core is characteristic of an Active Galactic Nucleus, or AGN, whose brightness is most likely powered by a supermassive black hole.

Seyfert Galaxy: Seyferts are spirals galaxies that have bright starlike cores. Seyferts have strong emission lines, and the emission lines are very broad, implying velocities from 500 to 4000 km/sec.
The Seyfert galaxy NGC 1566. The energy of Seyfert galaxy nuclei fluctuates quickly like the quasar fluctuations, so the energy generator must be quite small.

Astronomers classify NGC 4945 as a Seyfert galaxy, after Ameriacn astronomer Carl Seyfert, who first identified this family of galaxies - a subclass of active galactic nuclei - to have curious light signatures emanating from their central engines.
NGC 1808 is a Seyfert galaxy, a barred spiral galaxy with notable similarities to the Milky Way, approximately 40 million light-years distant.
Deep Sky Objects: NGC 1559 is a large and fairly bright spiral galaxy seen face on. It's a Seyfert galaxy (i.e. it's a source of significant nonthermal emissions, such as x-rays and ultaviolet). The galaxy is found between alpha and theta Ret.
