Lyra, the Harp or Lyre, is dominated by its luminary Vega, and so much by the "double-double" (Epsilon) and the strange eclipser Sheliak (Beta) that nobody pays much attention to another fascinating multiple, Zeta Lyrae, ...

*β Lyr (Sheliak): a group of eclipsing binaries is named after this variable star (3.45m, spectral class B8 II), the Beta-Lyrae-stars.
*γ Lyr (Sulafat): the main star of this multiple star system is of magnitude 3.24m and spectral class B9 III ...

Beta Lyrae is called Sheliak, a name that comes from the Arabic for ‘harp', in reference to the constellation as a whole. Beta Lyrae is a celebrated variable star.

[5352] beta Lyrae or Sheliak ("harp") is a binary star composed of two B-type stars that are so close together that it is impossible to resolve them with an optical telescope.

β (beta) Lyrae variables are extremely close binaries, named after the star β Lyrae or Sheliak.

Named stars in Lyra (Greek alphabet)
Aladfar (η Lyr), Alathfar (μ Lyr), Sheliak (β Lyr), Sulafat (γ Lyr), Vega (α Lyr).
Constellations adjoining Lyra: Cygnus, Draco, Hercules, Vulpecula.

The prototype of the β Lyrae type variable stars is β Lyrae, also called Sheliak. Its variability was discovered in 1784 by John Goodricke.

Beta Lyrae, sometimes known as "Sheliak" (Tortoise), is a prototype of a variable star in which a close companion is transferring matter to its gigantic primary. In Beta Lyrae's case, the transference is occurring very rapidly.

Named stars: Alpha Lyr (Wega), Beta Lyr (Sheliak)
