Shield Volcanoes
Wide, low profile volcanic cones produced by highly liquid lava.

Shield volcanoes, the third type of volcano, are built almost entirely of fluid lava flows.

Shield volcanoes. On both Earth and Mars, shield volcanoes have been produced by out-pourings of fluid molten rock. Over a long time, that builds slowly into a huge mountain. There are no shield volcanoes on the Moon.

shield volcanoes (Photoglossary of Volcanic Terms - USGS) Volcanoes with broad, gentle slopes and built by the eruption of fluid basalt lava are called shield volcanoes.

Many lava domes and shield volcanoes have been found by Magellan on Venus's surface, but none of the volcanoes has yet been proven to be currently active. The planet's surface shows no sign of plate tectonics.

The largest lava shield on Earth, Mauna Loa, rises over 9,000 m from the ocean floor, is 120 km in diameter and forms part of the Big Island of Hawaii, along with other shield volcanoes such as Mauna Kea and KÄ"lauea.

Mars observers reported a new dark area on the western side of the Elysium shield volcanoes [Capen and Parker, ...

These are shield volcanoes, similar to those that formed our planet's Hawaiian Islands, and they form over hot spots in Venus' crust.

Enormous Shield Volcanoes
In the previous section we saw an image of Mars with 3 large volcanoes on the left limb of the image. The volcanoes on Mars are now extinct, but they indicate a preceding period of significant Martian volcanism.

The dark background plains and the shield volcanoes both formed from the eruption of very fluid lava.

The Martian surface shows shield volcanoes - the largest of which, Olympus Mons, is 24 km above the surrounding plains.

There are several large shield volcanoes (similar to Hawaii or Olympus Mons) such as Sif Mons.

Olympus is very similar to Mauna Loa and the other basaltic shield volcanoes on the Earth since it is very wide and spread out.

One of the largest shield volcanoes in the solar system is Olympus Mons on Mars, with a diameter greater than 500 km and total relief of 25 km (below). The largest shield volcano on Earth is Mauna Loa on the Big Island of Hawaii.

Radar observations find that about 80 percent of the surface is covered by lava flows with a few Australia-size uplands of two to five km (1.2 to 3.1 miles) high, and there are large shield volcanoes that rise above the plains as high as 11 km (6.

This also doesn't marry with the idea that Venus volcanoes are shield volcanoes, a type of volcano that emits lava very gently down shallow-sloping sides, rather than emitting gas high into the atmosphere.

related to a higher concentration of heat-producing elements on the near-side hemisphere, as has been demonstrated by geochemical maps obtained from the Lunar Prospector gamma-ray spectrometer.[12][13] Several provinces containing shield volcanoes ...
