Spectral Sequence: The arrangement of a star's position in the temperature classification system (O, B, A, F, G, K, M), ranging from hot to cool.

Spectral Sequence
The arrangement of spectral classes (O,B,A,F,G,K, and M) ranging from hot to cool stars.

spectral sequence - The sequence of spectral classes of stars arranged in order of decreasing temperatures of stars of those classes.

The spectral sequence O-M represents stars of essentially the same chemical composition but of different temperatures and atmospheric pressures. This simple interpretation, put forward in the 1920s by the Indian astrophysicist Meghnad N.

Brown dwarfs are cooler than M dwarfs and the letters L and T now follow M in the spectral sequence.

SPECTRAL CLASS - Classification scheme, also called the "Harvard Spectral Sequence," based on the strength of stellar spectral lines, which indicate a star's temperature.

The first seven letters of the spectral sequence belong to the original Harvard Sequence of 1901. Cool, red (and infrared) L and T were added in 1999.

Continuity of other spectral features was also improved if B came before A and O came before B, with the end result, the spectral sequence: OBAFGKM.

Surface temperature is plotted on the horizontal axis, although in the unconventional sense temperature increasing to the left (so that the spectral sequence O, B, A,... reads left to right).

First applied to the solar chromosphere, he then applied it to stellar spectra. The Harvard astronomer Cecilia Helena Payne (later to become Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin) then demonstrated that the OBAFGKM spectral sequence is actually a sequence in ...
