Spindle Galaxy

Astronomy SpiculesSpiral Arm

The Spindle Galaxy (NGC 5866), a lenticular galaxy in the Draco constellation.

The Spindle Galaxy, NGC 5866, is a lenticular galaxy with a notable dust disk, seen edge-on. It is considered by some to be a candidate for Messier 102, a galaxy it closely resembles.

NGC3115 - Spindle Galaxy in Sextans
(RA 10h 05.2m , Dec. -7° 43', 8.9 mag., 8.1 x 2.8 arcmin.)
This is perfect edge-on spiral located 4°50' NNW of l Hydrae (see finder chart below).

However the Spindle Galaxy's centre is not without raising its own questions. Assuming theories of energy-into-radiation change are correct, then the source in NGC 3115 is inadequate, being a million times too dim.

NGC 3115 The Spindle Galaxy. This striking object is bright and moderately large in size, about 6'x1' in extent. It has a sharply brighter core and a stellar nucleus. A very pretty object.

Some lenticular galaxies (abbreviated SO galaxies) include M84 (in Virgo), M85 (in Virgo), M86 (in Virgo), NGC 5866 (the Spindle Galaxy), and perhaps M102. Enchanted Learning®
