A glass prism splits white light into a spectrum of its consituent colours, or wavelengths.

A device that splits light into its component parts or spectrum. A diffraction grating often consists of a mirror with thousands of closely spaced parallel lines, which spread out the light into parallel bands of colors or distinct fine lines or bars.

beam splitter (Plasma Physics and Fusion Energy Glossary) Optical device for dividing a beam of electromagnetic radiation into two or more separate beams.

beam splitter A partially reflecting mirror which permits some incident light to pass through and reflects the remainder.

When sunlight is split by a prism, at first glance it appears to produce a continuous spectrum. However, closer scrutiny with a spectroscope shows that the solar spectrum is interrupted by a large number of narrow dark lines, as shown in Figure 4.4.

ZEEMAN EFFECT - Splitting of atomic energy levels into a larger number of levels when magnetic fields are present; the resulting spectral lines are also split. The pattern and amount of splitting indicate the strength of the magnetic field.

Zeeman Effect - The splitting of a spectral line into two or more components when the atoms or molecules emitting the line are located in a magnetic field
Zenith - The point on the celestial sphere directly above an observer ...

Some systems use a beam splitter, a reference or artificial star and powerful computer processing to deform small tertiary mirror at a frequency of several hundred hertz to compensate for the distortions.

Among the favorite stars in the sky are the modest doubles, those that consist of two stars that are easily split with a small telescope, favorites being Albireo, Mizar, and Almach (Gamma Andromedae).

Also we can split the period into an earlier half, 1764 to 1817, and a later half, 1818 to 1872, containing respectively the earlier five and the later five of the above groups of sun-spot maximum and minimum years.

Star Trek inadvertently created a split infinitive in its opening tagline: "To boldly go where no man/one has gone before.

dissociation the splitting apart of a molecule into its constituent atoms, e.g., the splitting of water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen when water vapor is struck by ultraviolet light.

] I suddenly saw that directly to the North, over Onkoul's Tunguska road, the sky split in two and fire appeared high and wide over the forest (as Semenov showed, about 50 degrees up - expedition note).

Then came the accessories--spectrometers to split the light and deduce from its spectrum the composition of stars, ...

Notice that you can set this applet to a top view, an Earth view, or both on a split screen, and that you can start and stop the animation with a button.

Niels Bohr, the great Danish atomic physicist, brought news to Einstein in 1939 that the German refugee physicist Lise Meitner had split the uranium atom, with a slight loss of total mass that had been converted into energy.

This produces a splitting in the frequencies of the modes (owing to the Doppler shift from the two halves of the Sun). Because the different modes reach different depths in the Sun, the rotation at different depths can be mapped.

The fusion reaction is what takes place in a hydrogen bomb and releases much more light and heat than from an atomic bomb which is based on splitting large atoms.

The V-band light from old populations (ellipticals, spiral nuclei and bulges) is about evenly split between red giants and main-sequence stars.

An optical interferometer operates by splitting a beam of light with a half-silvered mirror, running the split beams through two paths or "arms" at a right angle to each other, reflecting the two beams back together and summing them in an eyepiece, ...

This group further split into a government group, a scientist group, a general public group, and a group in charge of "indoctrinating the young."
The pre-atmosphere group had to get us to Mars and set up.

Near the sun a comet can change drastically in size and shape; it may even split into two or more pieces, as Comet Biela did in 1846, and Comet West did in 1976. The comas of comets vary widely in size, some being the size of the earth or larger.

Spectroscopy is the technique of splitting light (or more precisely electromagnetic radiation) into its constituent wavelengths (a spectrum), in much the same way as a prism splits light into a rainbow of colours.

If you were to obtain a spectrum of a sunspot, you'd see pretty much the same spectrum as you see for the rest of the Sun, but the individual spectral features would be split apart.

One suggestion was that it is the seam where the two halves of the heavens are joined - or, conversely, where the two halves are coming apart like a split in the ceiling, letting in light from beyond.

This is a list of all 88 constellations split up into the months when they are best seen in the sky. The months listed assume that you are looking at the sky at 9:00 PM. For every hour later than 9:00, add half of a month.

In 1846, Biele's comet split in two while passing close to the Sun. Comet XIV passed within 10 million miles of the Sun in 1947 and also split in two. In 1976 Comet West broke into four pieces near the Sun.

Once the spacecraft reached the moon, the Lunar Module and the Command Module split from each other. The two astronauts in the Lunar Module landed on the moon. The third astronaut stayed in the Command Module in orbit around the moon.

However, the compact split-ring equatorial design can also remain fairly portable even with telescopes as large as 18 inches.

So saying, one of the elders runs over to where he is sitting and splits his smiling head open with a stone axe. There is much relief and rejoicing when the moon returns to normal a couple of hours later.

The most common form of interferometer consisting of a fiber optic or integrated optic device that contains an optical power splitter and combiner. There are two distinct optical paths between the power splitter and combiner.

Nuclear fission occurs (for example) when uranium atoms split apart. Nuclear fission powers nuclear reactors and atom bombs. Controlled nuclear fusion reactors do not exist at this time although they remain the subject of considerable research.

It was reported on Tuesday, May 2nd that the nucleus of Comet LINEAR has split in two! It is brightening as it approaches the Sun and may soon become visible to the naked eye. The comet will become extremely close to the Sun on May 24th.

If we send something to the inside of the ergosphere, and split it up into two parts, one goes in the black hole while the other comes out.

Astronomers created the image by splitting the star's light into its individual wavelength or colors. What makes the spectrum so powerful is the series of dark lines across the bands of color.

This is a fundamental assumption, known as the conservation of mass, and is based on the expectation that matter can never be created or destroyed, only split up or recombined.
