Spokes and other Structure
It was expected that collisions between ring particles would tend to make the rings uniform, but Voyager I found changing structures in the radial direction that are termed "spokes".

The spokes found in the B-ring appear only at radial distances between 43,000 kilometers (27,000 miles) and 57,000 kilometers (35,000 miles) above Saturn's clouds.

The spoken dialects have lost the case distinctions and make only limited use of the dual (it occurs only on nouns and its use is no longer required in all circumstances).

The dark spokes in Saturn's B ring were a surprise. The different orbital speeds of the ring particles should quickly shear apart any radial structure in the rings, but the spokes clearly survived the shearing! ...

A radial feature in the rings of Saturn.

The Vatican's spokesmen, and most Protestant and Jewish theological authorities. These people mesh a theistic view of creation with some form of the scientific theories about the age of the earth and the cause of the varieties of life.

Some early writers spoke of the Goat and Kids as a separate constellation, but since the time of Ptolemy they have been awkwardly combined with the Charioteer, the goat resting on the charioteer's shoulder, with the kids supported on his wrist.

That, combined with the suspicious straightness of the lines, bespoke of artificial structures, and this created a furor. Speculations concerning the possibility of intelligent life on Mars sprang up in the popular press.

Copernicus also had to be careful with his model - at least in how he advertised it or who he spoke to about it.

Perhaps equations were not meant to be read aloud, for the spoken word does not have the subtleties of meaning necessary for the task.

A series of dark radial "spokes" formed on the B ring, moved around the planet for about one ring orbit period, and then disappeared (Figure 12.12).

The Voyager spacecraft found dark radial features in the B ring, called spokes, which could not be explained in this manner, as their persistence and rotation around the rings were not consistent with orbital mechanics.

They did not know what this excess meant, but spoke to Bernie Burke of MIT, who knew that Dicke was now leading a group planning to measure the CMB. Ironically Dicke had forgotten about his old upper limit, but he knew how to do the measurement.
