STELLAR NURSERY
A stellar nursery is a nebula ( a large cloud of hydrogen gas in space) in which star formation is occurring (stars are formed from gas).

A stellar nursery is a nebula ( a large cloud of gas in space) in which star formation is occurring (stars are formed from gas). These nebulae are frequently illuminated by ultraviolet light which is emitted from the newborn stars.

This is a stellar nursery -- an enormous, lumpy cloud of cold gas and dust which is turning into hundreds of new stars. The gas is mostly hydrogen; the dust is something like the dust in a desert storm: basically, microscopic rocks.

So it was a surprise to discover that a pair of twins in the Orion nebula, a popular stellar nursery about 1,500 light-years away, have different temperatures and luminosities. One star is apparently developmentally delayed, relative to its partner.

The region of the sky imaged is known as Monoceros R2, a substantial stellar nursery embedded within a dark cloud in the constellation of Monoceros.

Plotting their movements backwards eventually brings them all to a more or less a single point about 600-800 million years ago, a fact explained by the theory that they all formed in the same stellar nursery.

M42, the Great Nebula in Orion. This image is about 32 arcminutes across. The nebula is 460 parsecs distant and is the closest HII region to us. It is a giant stellar nursery.

In the winter you can see the Orion Nebula (a stellar nursery) and star clusters such as the Pleiades and the Beehive cluster.
In the summer months you can see the Great Cluster in Hercules.
