Sunset, also called sundown in some American English dialects, is the time at which the Sun disappears below the horizon in the west.

Sunset is the daily disappearance of the sun below the horizon as a result of the Earth's rotation.

Sunset is the time at which the trailing limb of the first sets below the .

sunrise, sunset: the first (last) appearance of the Sun above the horizon each day. This occurs when the sun's altitude reaches -0º 50'. Note that astronomers define the rising of an object as an altitude of 0º.

Sunrise & Sunset Calendar
Another way of keeping track of the seasons is to watch the sunrise and sunset points on the horizon. The Sun rises and sets at its southernmost point for the year on the day of the Southern solstice.

Usually produced shortly after sunset, when the sky is already dark but sunlight still reaches the high altitude where the release occurs. The barium atoms are released as a vapor, they spread rapidly and are readily ionized by sunlight.

Before sunset, he measured the longitudinal arc separating the Moon from the Sun. Then, after sunset, he measured the arc from the Moon to the star.

It was their custom to designate as the beginning of each month the day after the new moon, when the lunar crescent first appears after sunset.

(Do we mean a 24 hour period or do we mean the time between sunrise and sunset?) We usually do not have to define it with great quantitative precision to make use of it.

At the beginning of July and 40 minutes after sunset Mercury will be about 6° above the horizon; this will increase to 14° late in the month, still 40 minutes after sunset.

As the moon wanes (becoming a half moon and a crescent moon, on the way to a new moon), the moon rises during the night, after sunset, rising later each night. It then sets in the daytime, after the sun rises.

Sometimes, at sunrise or sunset, there are flashes of green light visible near the sun. This effect only happens when there are no clouds nearb the sun.

At this point, the Moon will be nearly due south at sunset, and will set at midnight standard time. The best predawn viewing is when the Moon is in the third quarter stage. At this time, the Moon rises at midnight, and is due south at dawn.

This dust originates from comets and from asteroid collisions, and can sometimes be seen with the naked eye as a triangular glow above the horizon just before sunrise or after sunset.

If you were located at the location labeled 6 PM, the Moon would be high in the sky, and the Sun would be on the horizon; in this case, this is also referred to as the time of sunset.

I got to Fred's "Dark Sky Reserve" just past sunset - Fred just managed to get back from work as well. We hauled scopes to the side of a hill used a year ago. Fred's 8 inch SCT was a snap to get there.

First, Mercury is never more than 2745' of angle away from the Sun and is thus seen as a "morning" star just before sunrise or an "evening" star just after sunset.

A visitor to the planet would also witness some of the most peculiar sunsets in the solar system.
Sometimes Mercury's rapid motion round the sun outpaces it's genteel rotation.

Atmospheric refraction is variable to such an extent that sunrise and sunset times cannot be predicted with any better precision than to the nearest minute.

He used Latin words to name clouds. He used words such as "cumulus" and "cirrus." Cumulus means "pile." Cumulus clouds look like piles of cotton balls.

When the Sun is close to the horizon, such as at Sunrise and Sunset, the light must pass through a much longer path in the atmosphere; more of the blue light is scattered out of this direction, leaving only the red light.

They just swing from the east of the Sun to the west and back, and we can only see them just before sunrise or just after sunset. During the period that we can see them before sunrise, we call them the "morning stars." It lasts for many days.

Two planets and a star team up with the crescent Moon in the western evening sky shortly after sunset over the next few nights. They are low in the sky as darkness falls, so you need a clear horizon to see them.

Like Mercury, Venus is close to the Sun and so we can only see it before sunrise or after sunset. However, it can appear further above the horizon than Mercury.
