Terminator
The line that separates day from night on the surface of the or other celestial body.

Definition: terminator: The dividing line between the illuminated and the unilluminated part of the moon's or a planet's disk. The line of sunrise or sunset on a planet or its satellite.

terminator: the edge of the shadow cast by a self-shadowing object, such as the edge of the illuminated part of the moon.

terminator: the line on the Moon or a planet that divides the bright, sunlit part from the part in shadow. Its usually the most exciting and detailed region of the Moon to view through a telescope.

terminator (Galileo Project Glossary - JPL) The line of sunrise or sunset on a planet or its satellite.

terminator The line separating illuminated and dark portions of a celestial body, as the moon, which is not self luminous. ternary notation A system of positional notation using 3 as a base. terrestrial Of or pertaining to the earth.

From its vantage point over Titan's terminator, both the dayside and nightside of the crescent moon are seen, with the sunlit side on the left.

The best views of the Moon occur along the terminator - a sharp line which divides the sunlit and dark parts of the Moon. The terminator represents that part of the Moon experiencing sunrise or sunset.

Notice that surface features are much more visible near the terminator (the line separating light from dark), where sunlight strikes at a sharp angle, and shadows highlight the topography.

The rate of meteor activity is usually greatest near dawn because the Earth's orbital motion is in the direction of the dawn terminator. Earth scoops up meteoroids on the dawn side of the planet and outruns them on the dusk side.

"Our first images were taken along the Moon's terminator - the dividing line between day and night - making us initially unsure of how they would turn out," said LROC Principal Investigator Mark Robinson of Arizona State University in Tempe.

While flying over the terminator, where Titan's day and night meet, on July 2, 2004, Cassini's visual and infrared mapping spectrometer recorded the glow of the gas shrouded moon. Blue shows sunlight piercing thick atmosphere to the surface.

The single most effective method is to use a telescope with a medium power eyepiece to observe the moon's surface near the terminator, where shadows throw in relief a variety of lunar surface detail of all angular sizes.

The strong lighting contrast along the terminator (the line separating day from night on Eros) makes it easy to see that most of the surface is saturated with impact craters.

For a Halloween treat, follow the quarter Moon's terminator (the line dividing night from day) upward to find the Moon's north pole at the top of the lunar disk, then downward to find the Moon's south pole at bottom.

5 degrees longitude from the limb, and 15 from the dawn terminator just out of view of the Earth.

A movie (below) has been constructed just after MESSENGER crossed the night/day line (or terminator) during October 2008 fly-by. At the beginning of this movie, it is dawn and the Sun is just off the horizon.

when they are on the terminator). The Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn are about 23.5 degrees from the Equator, which means that during Summer solstice the pole makes an angle of (90 - 23.5) = 66.

Composition - In addition to image size, move the scope (especially the moon) to an area where there is more contrast, such as the terminator. Some of the brighter areas of the moon may bloom.

As I recall, he based his idea on the fact that he showed the Moon must be round by observing the shape of the terminator (the line between the part of the Moon in light and the part of the Moon in the dark) as it moved through its orbital cycle.

These forms enable you to generate a diagram showing the appearance of a planetary system at a specified time. Bodies and rings are rendered with terminators and shadows as appropriate.

While heading out for its rendezvous with Jupiter, a camera on NASA's Galileo spacecraft snapped this 1992 image of Earth and its Moon. The terminator, or line between night and day, is clearly visible on the two worlds. Image courtesy of NASA.

Viscously relaxed craters tend to have domed floors, or are recognized as craters only by a raised, circular rim (seen at center just below the terminator in Figure 5).

As the Moon revolves around Earth, different parts of this face are illuminated by the Sun, leading to the lunar phases: a dark part of the face is separated from a light part by the solar terminator line.

As was stated in Terminator 2 - "it is liquid metal." While it isn't iron or nickel, it does have some of the same properties as these metals, and it can conduct electricity.

In the illustration above, the vehicle is launching from a site near the Earth's terminator which is going into night as the Earth's rotation takes it around away from the sun.

from its normal great-circle path, which is the shortest distance between two points on Earth. Strong horizontal gradients are associated with the equatorward boundary of the auroral oval (especially in the night sector) and the sunrise terminator.

result, it always presents the same face to the planet. As the Moon orbits Earth, different parts of its face are illuminated by the Sun, leading to the lunar phases: The dark part of the face is separated from the light part by the solar terminator.

km), or about 60 times the radius of the earth itself. The plane of the moon's orbit is tilted, or inclined, at an angle of about 5° with respect to the ecliptic. The line dividing the bright and dark portions of the moon is called the terminator.
