[2043] theta Centauri or Menkent ("shoulder of the Centaur") is the third brightest star in Centaurus. It is an orange giant with a magnitude of 2.06 approximately 61 light-.years distant from Earth.
MENKENT (Theta Centauri). Centaurus is dominated by its two brightest stars, Rigil Kentaurus (Alpha Centauri, third brightest star in the sky and the nearest star to the Earth) and first magnitude Hadar (Beta Centauri).
The name Menkent for Theta Centauri is not found in Allen, but "Gibson" and "Dolan" offer the translation "The Shoulder of the Centaur" for the name.
To locate Lupus, one might first begin with the arms of Centaurus (if need be, one can review this constellation from the Archives). Starting at theta Centauri starhop to phi Centauri then eta and finally kappa Centauri.
