Alpha Centauri (α Centauri / α Cen); (also known as Rigil Kentaurus, Rigil Kent, or Toliman) is the brightest star in the southern constellation of Centaurus and an established binary star system, Alpha Centauri AB (α Cen AB).

Alpha Centauri is also known as Rigil Kentaurus ("foot of the Centaur"), Rigil Kent or Toliman. It is believed to be the closest star system to our own solar system, lying only 4.37 light-years away from the Sun.
