When the total eclipse of the Sun is completed, the shadow of the Moon passes and sunlight appears once again at the western edge of the Sun.

Totality lasts for one hour and twenty-two minutes. The Moon begins its exit out of the Earth's shadow at 11:45 p.m., with a partial eclipse lingering onward for one hour and nine minutes. When the Moon completely leaves the Earth's shadow by 12:54 a.

Total known
There are estimated to be perhaps 70,000 TNOs, each at least 100 km across, between 30 and 50 astronomical units from the Sun.

Totality can never last more than 7 min 40 seconds, and is usually a good deal shorter. During each millennium there are typically fewer than 10 total solar eclipses exceeding 7 minutes. The last time this happened was June 30, 1973.

A total eclipse will occur when the observer is located within the umbra of the occulting body.

A total eclipse of the moon occurs on the morning of June 16 (NZST). The moon enters the penumbra just after 5.24 am, NZST. It starts moving into the total shadow of the umbra almost an hour later. By then the moon will be getting low in NZ.

A total solar eclipse, however, is much more spectacular. At totality, the disc of the Sun is completely obscured by the new Moon, and only the ghostly solar corona and perhaps gigantic solar flares are visible around the edges of the Moon.

A total lunar eclipse occurs when the moon passes completely into the umbra. If it moves directly through the center, it is obscured for about 2 hr.
