Universal Time
Related Category: Astronomy: General
(UT), the international time standard common to every place in the world, it nominally reflects the mean solar time along the earth's prime meridian (renumbered to equate to civil time).

Universal time (UT) is simply the number of hours, minutes, and seconds which have elapsed since (when the is at a of 180°) in the Greenwich time zone.

Universal Time is a timescale based on the rotation of the Earth. It is a modern continuation of Greenwich Mean Time , i.e.

Universal Time (UT)
(a) The local mean time of the prime meridian. It is the same as Greenwich mean time, counted from 0 hours beginning at Greenwich mean midnight.

Universal time A time system measured on the Meridian of Greenwich, it is 10 hours less than Australian Eastern Standard Time (AEST).
Zenith The point directly overhead (90° in altitude).

Universal Time (UT). See Coordinated Universal Time.
Very High Frequency (VHF). That portion of the radio frequency spectrum from 30 to 300 MHz.
Very Low Frequency (VLF). That portion of the radio frequency spectrum from 3 to 30 kHz.

Universal Time (UT, or UTC). A measure of time used by astronomers; UT conforms (within a close approximation) to the mean daily (apparent) motion of the sun.

Universal Time (UT, UTC). Co-ordinated Universal Time. The time standard by which Greenwich Mean Time became known as for scientific purposes in 1928. UTC is the time given by broadcast time since 1972.

Universal Time (UT)
also known as Greenwich Mean Time, this is local time on the Greenwich meridian. Universal time is used by astronomers as a standard measure of time.

UNIVERSAL TIME
Universal time (abbreviated UT) is the same as Greenwich Mean Time (abbreviated GMT); it is the time zone of Greenwich, England (longitude zero).

Universal Time Coordinated [LLM96]
Universe
The total celestial cosmos. According to Gott et al. the universe seems to be on a large scale isotropic, homogeneous, matter-dominated, and with negligible pressure.

Universal Time: Greenwich Mean Time, expressed in the 24-hour system. For example, 23:00 UT is 6 pm Eastern Standard Time or 7 pm Eastern Daylight Time.

Universal Time is notionally based on the WGS84 meridian. However, the standard international time UTC can be discrepant from the observed time on the meridian by up to about one second, because of changes in the earth's rotation.

UT (Universal Time) The local time at the 0 meridian passing through Greenwich, England; it is t he same everywhere. Same as GMT (Greenwich Mean Time).
V
Vacuum A space absent of matter or nearly so.

UT, Universal Time also called Zulu (Z) time, was previously called Greenwich Mean Time, GMT.

Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) is the modern standard, and takes into account leap seconds. In popular usage, the two terms are synonymous.
Abbreviation: GMT

Coordinated Universal Time: Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) is a system we astronomers use. Also, times for us are usually converted to 24-hour time, i.e., 1 a.m. is 0100 hours, 1 p.m. is 1300 hours and so on. Mid-night or 12 a.m.

universal time (NASA Thesaurus / NASA SP-7, 1965) (abbr UT)
Time defined by the rotational motion of the earth and determined from the apparent diurnal motions which reflect this rotation; because of variations in the rate of rotation, ...

UT measurement is based on standard seconds. The version referred to as UTC (Universal Time, Co-ordinated) simply means the value averaged over a number of atomic clocks world-wide. In aviation, it is referred to as Z or zulu.

The Date Line and Universal Time (UT)
Suppose it is noon where you are and you proceed west--and suppose you could travel instantly to wherever you wanted.

COORDINATED UNIVERSAL TIME. By international agreement, the local time at the prime meridian, which passes through Greenwich, England. Therefore, it is also known as GREENWICH MEAN TIME, or sometimes simply UNIVERSAL TIME. CORONA.

The recording provides you with UTC, or Coordinated Universal Time, also called Greenwich Mean Time.

Universal Time Abbreviated UT. The same as Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) in England. Eastern Standard Time (EST) is five hours earlier than Universal Time.

Whatever time it is in Greenwich is called Universal Time (abbreviated UT).
Well, that's almost true.

Time Zones and Universal Time
As a matter of civil convenience, the Earth is divided into various time zones.

False color has been used here to enhance the visibility of certain features in this composite of three images of the Minos Linea region on Jupiter's moon Europa taken on 28 June 1996 Universal Time by the Galileo spacecraft.

MTC is a proposed Mars analog to Universal Time (UT) on Earth. It is defined as the mean solar time at Mars's prime meridian (i.e., at the centre of the crater Airy-0).

Standard Time in most countries is either ahead or behind Universal Time (which is the same as Greenwich Mean Time).

The sequence of images shown above spans more than a nine hour period from 12:07 to 21:20 Universal Time (UT), (7:07am to 4:20pm central daylight savings time). The data include two M-class flares: an M6.

A highly accurate clock that keeps either sidereal time or Universal Time. Formerly, such instruments were checked by timing the passage of clock stars across the meridian using a meridian or transit circle and a book of clock errors.

It includes routines for conversions between Universal Time (UTC), Atomic Time (TAI), and Ephemeris Time (ET). It also performs conversions between calendar dates and Julian dates, and interprets or formats dates and times in a variety of styles.

For recording observations of static objects, such as deep sky, I suggest the use of local time, not Universal Time (U.T.). U.T. is more useful for timing dynamic events, such as occultations or eclipses, or for meteor shower counts.

The LCROSS impacts will occur at 11.30 Universal Time on Friday 9 October.

Remember that the listed times are in UT (Universal Time). To convert to your time zone, subtract 4 hours for EDT (Eastern Daylight Time), 5 hours for CDT, 6 hours for MDT and 7 hours for PDT.
