Uranus is so far away that we can't get a great deal of information on it from this distance. A few things we can see are its tilt and rotation rate. Uranus is pretty much tipped over on its side.

URANUS and NEPTUNE: Like Jupiter and Saturn, Uranus and Neptune are mostly gaseous planets, and only the upper layers of their atmosphere can be studied.

William Herschel discovered and named the two largest of Uranus's five major moons, Titania and Oberon, in 1789. British astronomer William Lassell found the next largest, Ariel and Umbriel, in 1851.

One of the most interesting facts about Uranus is that its rotational axis is almost parallel to the orbital plane. As a result, Uranus seems to be rolling on the orbital plane.

Uranus is the seventh planet from the Sun. Its surface is covered with frozen methane (CH4). This reflects blue light from the Sun. Like Jupiter, Saturn and Neptune, Uranus also has a ring.
Like Uranus, Neptune appears to be composed of mostly "ices" and rock, with about 15 percent hydrogen and a little helium. According to astronomer Richard Crowe, the planet may have a rock-ice core of about 1.
Neptune and Uranus have very dark, almost black, rings. Here again, the rings would be much older than Saturn's rings because they are so dark. Scientists aren't sure how those rings were formed, either.

Though they average 24 astronomical units apart (23 percent farther than Uranus is from the Sun), the elliptical orbit sends them from a farthest distance of 36 astronomical units to 11, about Saturn's solar distance.
