Venus rotates in the opposite direction of the Earth (and the other planets, except possibly Uranus). Looking from the north, Venus rotates clockwise, while the other planets rotate counterclockwise.
Venus is the second closest planet to the Sun. Telescopes reveal little about the planet due to global cloud cover. Venus' mass and volume are quite similar to Earth's (Venus' mass is 81.5% of Earth's and its volume is 86% of Earth's).
Venus has a number of inactive shield volcanos, but the number of identifiable craters is far below the expected value. The highest plateau is Ishtar Terra, upon which rests Maxwell, Venus's highest mountain.
Venus has an iron core but only a very weak magnetic field. It has no moons. Venus is about 7,521 miles (12,104 km) in diameter; this is about 95% of the diameter of the Earth.

Overview
When Venus was first studied in modern times, scientists saw a beautiful world that was almost the size of Earth, and it had a thick cover of clouds.
Venus is sometimes regarded as Earth's sister planet. In some ways they are very similar, e.g. they are roughly the same size, their densities and chemical compositions are similar, they both have relatively young surfaces.
Venus' surface is relatively young geologically speaking. It appears to have been completely resurfaced 300 to 500 million years ago. Scientists debate how and why this occurred.
Venus is the brightest planet in the sky and played an important role in the calendar of the ancient Maya of Yucatan. The first astronomer to use the telescope was Galileo in 1609, and he observed Venus throughout 1610.
Venus is often referred to as the Morning Star because it orbits closer to the Sun than our planet. This causes Venus to appear in the western sky after the sun sets and rise in the East before the sun breaks the horizon.

The Earth has a protective layer known as the Ozone Layer. This important shield protects the Earth from the Sun's ultraviolet radiation. Venus does not have an ozone layer.

Venus is the second closest planet to the sun. Viewed from earth it is the brightest of the planets. In fact if you know where to look it is possible to see it in broad daylight.

If Venus is such an uninviting place, why are we interested in it?

Venus was the first planet to ever be reached by a space probe. In 1962, Mariner 2 flew within 34,400 kilometers of the surface of Venus and transmitted to Earth information about its temperature and details about its atmosphere and rotational period.
