Virgo, the Maiden, was associated with Babylonian godess of fertility Ishtar with the brightest star, Spica seen as the Ear of Grain. Nearby Leo and Coma represented two other attribute of Ishtar: Lion and Cluster of Dates.

Virgo is the second-largest constellation in the sky, exceeded only by the much fainter Hydra. The Greeks called the constellation Parthenos.
Virgo has the second largest area of any constellation in the sky, about 1300 square degrees bested only slightly by adjoining Hydra.
Virgo is well known for containing a mixture of elliptical and spiral galaxies. One giant elliptical galaxy in particular - Messier 86 - has also become a possible culprit responsible for the deformation of NGC 4438.

The Virgo Cluster is the closest and best-studied great cluster of galaxies, lying at a distance of approximately 20 Mpc in the constellation of Virgo.

VIRGO CLUSTER
The Virgo cluster is a massive cluster of over 100 galaxies (including M61, M87, M90, and M100) and a lot of very hot, X-ray emitting gas. This cluster is located mostly within the constellation Virgo.

Saturn is in Virgo for the whole of 2010. It starts the year as a morning object rising about 1 am NZDT in most of New Zealand. The planet is stationary on January 15 after which it starts its retrograde motion. It reaches opposition on March 22.
