Virgo A
A strong radio source. Optically, it is an elliptical galaxy (M87) with a luminous blue jet about 1500 pc long. It is also an X-ray source (3C 274, Virgo X-1, 2U 1228+12).

Messier 87, or Virgo A, is the largest and most luminous galaxy in the Virgo Cluster and the largest giant elliptical galaxy near our solar system. It is an elliptical galaxy about 55 million light-years distant.
M87 (also known as Virgo A, Messier Object 87, Messier 87 or NGC 4486) is a giant elliptical galaxy dominating the Virgo cluster. Identified as a strong radio source, it is also one of the largest known galaxies.
The constellation is situated between Virgo and Cancer and is the 12th largest, measuring 947 degrees. It contains many bright and interesting stars and numerous galaxies, five bright enough to be catalogued by Messier.
Spica is the brightest star in Virgo and naturally Saturn will be in the same constellation all month. On April 17, the moon, only a few hours short of being full will pass Saturn and Spica.

A Serpent was the Egyptian equivalent of Scorpio; the Arrow only of Sagittarius was retained; Capricornus became " Life," or a Mirror as an image of life; Aquarius survived as Water; Taurus, Virgo and Pisces remained unchanged.
The earth signs of Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn are noted for their practicality and security. When an earth sign is on the ascendant the outer manner is shy, serious and cautious.
While the galaxies in Ursa Major are 10-40 million light years away, the galaxies of Virgo are about twice as distant at about 70 million light years. As such, these galaxies show a lot less detail.
The Local Group is very small, when compared to the famous galaxy clusters like those in Virgo and Coma, which span hundreds of millions of light years.
July's Hubble Heritage image is of M87, AKA NGC 4486, AKA Virgo A, a giant elliptical galaxy.
The earliest studies (back to the Messier catalog, had anyone known what all those blobs in the spring sky meant) showed that clumps of galaxies exist - such as the prominent ones in Virgo and Coma.
Members of some of the closest can be seen with a small telescope in the constellations Virgo and Coma Berenices. We can trace clusters of galaxies out to the furthest distances that we can reach. Some of these clusters contain thousands of galaxies.
Leo is seen along the in the Northern Hemisphere along the ecliptic between Virgo and Cancer. The brightest star (Alpha Leo) in Leo is Regulus (meaning "little king").
It also offers a wealth of galaxies, spread throughout the constellations of Virgo and the lesser known Coma Bernecies.
The nearest major clusters to the Local Group are the Virgo and Coma clusters.
