VISUAL MAGNITUDE
Visual (apparent) magnitude is a measure of the brightness of a celestial object as seen from Earth. The lower the number, the brighter the object. Negative numbers indicate extreme brightness.

Visual Magnitude
A scale used by astronomers to measure the brightness of a star or other celestial object. Visual magnitude measures only the visible light from the object. On this scale, bright objects have a lower number than dim objects.

The Visual Magnitude and distance indicate a luminosity 110 times that of the sun. The star has about 28 times the diameter of the sun.

This visual magnitude depends considerably on how close the star is as well as its intrinsic brightness. Obviously a very bright star at a considerable distance will appear dimmer to us than a less bright star which is quite a bit closer.

Typically shining at visual magnitude 0.7 (ranking 11th in the sky), this class M (M1.5) red supergiant (with a temperature of about 3650 Kelvin) is a semi-regular variable that changes between magnitude 0.3 and 1.

We use the visual magnitude, also known as apparent magnitude, to tell others how bright a star is. It is a log scale in intensity. Thus, magnitude and intensity both are scales for brightness of a star.

The Yale Bright Star Catalogue's notes entry for HR 8721 indicate that TW PsA is a BY Draconi-type variable (Vogt et al, 1983) that varies in apparent visual magnitude from 6.44 to 6.

Normally one must state the frequency range over which the measurement is made. The Sun has an absolute visual magnitude of 4.83, and the brightest star in the sky, Sirius, has an absolute visual magnitude of 1.4 and an apparent magnitude of -4.6.

It is interesting (if not slightly suspicious) that some QSOs at z~3 are not very faint (visual magnitudes 16-18). The current redshift record is 5.80 (as of November 2000 with the first round of SDSS objects, Fan et al. 2000 AJ 120, 1167).

As an example, we have already discussed how the Sun peaks in the yellow-green part of the spectrum so its Visual magnitude is greater than its Blue or Ultraviolet. In fact (B-V) for the sun is +0.62, i.e., it is brighter in V than in B.
