White Light
Visible radiation that gives a sensation of whiteness. The effect is very subjective and depends very much upon conditions and contrast.

White Light (WL). Sunlight integrated over the visible portion of the spectrum (4000 - 7000 angstroms) so that all colors are blended to appear white to the eye.

White light is a mixture of colors, which we conventionally divide into six major hues"red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet. As shown in Figure 3.10, we can identify each of these basic colors by passing light through a prism.

White light is made of different colors (wavelengths). When white light is passed through a prism or diffraction grating, it is spread out into all of its different colors. You see this happen every time you see a rainbow.

White light (what we call or optical light) can be split up into its colors easily and with a familiar result - the rainbow. All we have to do is use a slit to focus a narrow beam of the light at a prism. This set-up is actually a basic spectrometer.

When white light is passed through a cold gas, atoms in the gas absorb certain wavelengths of the light, producing dark bands in the spectrum. The pattern of bands can be used to identify the elements that make up the gas. (Image by Duncan Kopernicki.

When white light from the Sun or a light bulb passes through a prism, the light splits into its component wavelengths. Collectively, these components of light are called a spectrum.

If the white light from a luminous source is passed through a gas, the gas may absorb certain wavelengths from the continuous spectrum so that those wavelengths will be missing or diminished in its spectrum, thus producing dark lines.

The so-called "white light corona" originates from emission lines, such as ionised helium, iron, nickel and calcium (E corona), continuum sunlight scattered off electrons close to the chromosphere (K corona), ...

At mid-fourth magnitude, Mekbuda (just southwest of brighter Wasat, Delta Geminorum) shines with the yellow-white light of the Sun, the temperature of the two about the same. That, however, is about where the similarity ends.

Although we tend to think of light as just the visible white light that we see with, light comes in a complete spectrum of types, the electromagnetic spectrum. Each "flavor" of light is characterized by a particular wavelength.

That is to say, they stop out just those sections of white light transmitted through them which form their own special luminous badges.

It can be used to produce the color spectrum of white light using a prism. It can also be a problem, causing chromatic aberration in lenses.

You might just think of it as white light from a typical light bulb or the yellow light from the Sun, but if you were to take that light and pass it through a prism you'd get a rainbow.

During this period he investigated the refraction of light, demonstrating that a prism could decompose white light into a spectrum of colours, and then a lens and a second prism could recompose the multicoloured spectrum into white light.

In 1666 Newton discovered the nature of white light by passing a beam of sunlight through a prism. He invented the calculus about 1669 but did not formally publish his ideas until 35 years later. He built the first reflecting telescope in 1668.

The fundamental components are a white light source (lamp), a lower polarizer, a rotating stage to hold the rock thin section, a lens, an upper polarizer and a viewing eyepiece. As an analogy, the polarizers work like Polaroid sunglasses.

School students often use perspex prisms from ray box kits to disperse or "split" white light from an incandescent bulb into the component colours of the spectrum.

A high resolution white light image of the Sun shows a pattern that looks something like rice grains. Very large convection cells cause this granulation. The bright center of each cell is the top of a rising column of hot gas.

Isaac Newton showed that not only can a triangular prism separate a beam of sunlight into rainbow colors (that had already been known), but also that, when a second prism brings the different colors together again, white light is once more obtained.

Further along and the bar is cooler and now only yellowish-white light is emitted. This is followed by yellow, then orange and finally red.

A continuous spectrum is a spectrum of emitted light that contains all wavelengths of the colors that compose white light (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet, from long to short wavelength).

The white light from the Sun is composed of all the colors of the rainbow. During the day, the molecules in the air scatter the blue light from the Sun more that the red light making the sky appear blue.

SPECTROSCOPE
An instrument that breaks up the white light from a star into its different colors.
SUNSPOT
A dark area on the Sun's surface that is cooler than the area around it. Sunspots are caused by magnetic storms on the Sun.

SPECTRUM
The spectrum is the band of colors that white light is composed of, in the order: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet (from long to short wavelength). first discovered that sunlight could be divided into the visible spectrum.

When viewed from the Earth and its environs, it appears in the night sky as a hazy band of white light (hence "milky") across the celestial sphere, formed by stars within the disc of its namesake galaxy.

Its white light is just scattered light from the photosphere, which is why its color is the same of that of the photosphere. Below is a very clear image of the corona around the Sun, taken during a solar eclipse.

The clearing can be limited to only one hemisphere and can vary in intensity from 0 (no surface features detected) to 3 (surface features can be seen also in white light).

For example, an object that absorbs blue, green and yellow light will appear red when viewed under white light. Absorption spectra can therefore be used to identify elements present in a gas or liquid.

A typical mature sunspot is seen in white light (Figure 6) to have roughly the form of a daisy.

CMYK - A subtractive color printing system where the primary colors are comprised of Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black components. The pigments in inks of these colors subtract from white light.

Thus, after passing through the low pressure gas, the spectrum of the original white light will have dark lines, called absorption lines. In the other direction, we will see the emission lines of the gas.

A transparent body with two nonparallel sides which refracts or disperses light into its component colours. White light is separated into a spectrum of colour upon exiting a prism.

It takes about 20 minutes for your eyes to completely adapt to darkness. Once your eyes become accustomed to the dark, even a momentary flash of white light can ruin it and your eyes will have to adapt all over again.
